Great post! I Can't agree more with the points you make to get better at languages.
For me motivation is key. If I'm motivated, I'll make time for it. But it's true that even when you're motivated, it still takes a bit of discipline to be consistent, which I agree is also vital. It's better to do 30 minutes every day of the week, than 4 hours only on Saturdays.
I've always felt that language is 10% vocab + grammar — and 90% confidence. It makes such a difference when you're willing to speak and give it a shot. Great piece! Trés bon!
That's great that you are B1 in French, and I'm sure in no time you will be B2 since you are surrounded by it and it sounds like you have a decent base! A daily hobby the last couple years for me has been language learning, and I'm probably only between A2 and B1 in Russian to show for it.
Language learning is interesting because it's one of those things where progress is show enough that daily or weekly, or even monthly you can feel like there has been no progress sometimes. But over longer timeframes the progress is extremely obvious. It's hard to stay motivated when things are like this with the wrong mindset I think. Enjoying the process does help too!

You’re my language inspiration! It was so cool watching you learn Japanese and keep it up even after moving away
Aw, thanks :)

Russian! That’s so impressive. I think starting to think of it as a hobby vs. something you have to do is another great way to get motivated
