Taking a breather this week to spend time with family, but I thought I’d share one thing that makes me laugh about living in different countries.
Highly specific kids toys.
Our LEGO Duplo set came with all the important pieces — building blocks, two people, windows and doors, a car, some flowers, and…baguettes.
We’re also now in the toy kitchen stage, and our toddler’s play food looks a little different from what’s in other kids’ kitchens:
A full sushi set from Japan and a cheese board from France. The sushi set includes a mini matcha tea, soy sauce, chopsticks, and taiyaki dessert (the fish shaped thing — it’s sort of a stuffed waffle pancake).
The cheese board has all the essential cheeses, plus biscuits, chutney, a baguette, and a fig. There’s also a green trapezoid shaped thing that I can’t even figure out - any guesses?
It makes sense that toys are related to what kids see every day, since play is the way they learn and explore the world. It’s just a bonus for us adults that they’re adorably hilarious.
What other hyper-specific toys have you seen?
I'm obsessed with unexpected cultural differences, especially around parenthood! I'd add the sushi set and cheese board to my kids' holiday wish lists any day.
