Hi! I’m Cara.

Welcome to Crumbs from Abroad, where I share bits and pieces from my 8 years of living abroad. My stories range from cultural commentary to city guides, and my aim is to write things that are both useful and insightful.

Why “Crumbs from Abroad”?

I’ve always said if I wrote a memoir it’d be called “Crumbs in My Purse”. I love cookies. And pastries. Anything baked, really. And more often than not, I open one of my bags and there are actual crumbs at the bottom. The stages of my life are defined by those crumbs: mom’s chocolate chip cookies in my teens, wedding cookies in my 20s, Fabrique & Ottolenghi in my early 30s, baguettes & croissants in my late 30s.

Crumbs from Abroad is a play on that idea. Yes, I will talk about baked goods. But beyond that, I want to share a little slice of a life abroad. I’ve lived in London, Tokyo, and Paris, with stops in Thailand, Singapore, and Australia along the way. It’s impossible to share it all, so I’ll just try to give a taste.

What to expect

I share about day-to-day life as an expat in Paris, and I also write about my perspective on moving abroad—sometimes practical and sometimes more reflective. How life compares between the different countries I’ve lived in, how I approach making friends, ways of dealing with unexpected challenges that pop up. I hope this can be a place to get a peek into life outside of the US.
